How to recognise it

  • Your hip measurement is at least 5% larger than your bust or chest.
  • Your shoulders look narrower than your hips in a mirror.
  • Trousers that fit the hips are often loose at the waist.

The rule our calculator uses: Hips at least 5% wider than bust or chest (and the waist is not as wide as the hips). See all rules.

For women

Cuts that tend to flatter

  • A-line skirts and dressesThey skim over hips and thighs and flare gently, which balances the lower half.
  • Boat necks and wide or detailed necklinesThey draw the eye up and widen the shoulder line.
  • Bootcut or wide-leg trousersA slightly wider hem balances the hips, so the leg looks longer and straighter.

Usually less flattering

  • Skinny jeans with a short, tight topThe tight leg and the hem line at the hip put all the focus on the widest point.
  • Skirts with pockets or details at the hipExtra fabric or decoration adds width where you already have it.
  • Halter and very narrow necklinesThey make the shoulders look narrower, so the hips look wider by contrast.

For men

Cuts that tend to flatter

  • Structured jackets with defined shouldersThey add width at the top to balance wider hips.
  • Straight-leg trousers in darker coloursAn even, darker leg does not add width at the hips.
  • Chest pockets or detail on the upper halfDetail higher up draws the eye towards the shoulders.

Usually less flattering

  • Skinny trousersThey hug the hips and thighs and make them the focus.
  • Very slim shirts tucked in tightlyThey outline a narrower top against the wider hips.
  • Cargo pockets and bulky details at the hipExtra bulk lands exactly where you are widest.
